The ages and distances of globular clusters with the luminosity function method : the case of M 5 and M 55 .

چکیده
We present new age and distance determinations for the Galactic Globular Clusters M55 and M5, using the luminosity function method (Jimenez & Padoan 1996, Padoan & Jimenez 1997). We find an age of 11.8 ± 1.5 Gyr for M55 and 11.1 ± 0.7 Gyr for M5. This confirms previous results (Jimenez et al. 1996, Sandquist et al. 1996) and allows to conclude that the oldest stars in the Universe are not older than 14 Gyr. We also find m−M = 14.13±0.11 for M55, and m−M = 14.49±0.06 for M5. These values agree with the ones obtained using the tip of the red giant branch (Jimenez et al. 1996) and the sub-dwarf fitting method (Sandquist et al. 1996).

The initial distribution and evolution of globular cluster systems
This work considers the evolution of globular cluster systems in galaxies. Here globular cluster systems start with power-law mass functions φ ∼ M−α with slopes around 2.0, similar to what has been observed for the young luminous clusters seen in merging and interacting galaxies. We then follow the orbits of the clusters through their parent galaxy, allowing various destruction mechanisms to di...

The aim of the present work is detection of galaxy clusters based on weak gravitational lensing method. We apply mass aperture statistics method to 0.32 square degrees data obtained with the WFI@MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope and detect mass peaks based on their mass not the luminosity. So by the application of proper filter function, shear profile and mass map are produced. Finally mass peaks with hi...
متن کاملAges of globular clusters: breaking the age-distance degeneracy with the luminosity function
We extend our previous method to determine globular cluster ages using the luminosity function (Jimenez & Padoan 1996). We show that the luminosity function depends on both age and distance modulus and that it is possible to distinguish between the two. This method provides at the same time independent determinations of distance and age of a GC by simply counting the number of stars found insid...

We present new BVI ground-based photometry and VI space-based photometry for the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341) and examine luminosity functions in B, V, and I containing over 50,000 stars ranging from the tip of the red giant branch to several magnitudes below the main sequence turn off. Once corrected for completeness, the observed luminosity functions agree very well with theoretical models...
متن کاملThe Globular Cluster Luminosity Function as a Distance Indicator: Dynamical Effects
The dynamical evolution of the globular cluster systems in galaxies is predicted, based on the standard dynamical theory normalized to the example of the Milky Way. The major processes varying with the galactocentric distance are the tidal shocks and dynamical friction. Our simple model explains, on a quantitative basis, the observed differences of the inner and outer populations of globular cl...
